Conversations: symmetrical/asymmetrical

types of power

asymetrical conversations

Teacher: Angel! Why are you late?
Angel: Sorry Miss! I missed my train
Teacher: you need to wake up earlier then dont you
Angel: okay..
Teacher: what from are you in?
Angel: 12RPG
Teacher: if you're late again i will take your lunch time and early finishs away!
Angel: no! Miss I won't be late again
Teacher: We'll see won't we.

This is a asymetrical conversation between a student and a teacher, displaying the power of the teacher over the student because of the teachers authority in the role of a teacher. when angel replys to the teachers question of why are you late, the student immedietly answers back to apoligising to the teacher this implies a sense of power over the student.

Symmetrical conversation

Hayley: hey Claud, what you doing this weekend?
Claudia: going to nandos on Friday with daisy, grace and angel I think! What you doing?
Hayley: nothing I don't think
Claudia: come with us hay!
Hayley: yeah that will be good! You going Brentwood?
Claudia: yep! 8:00 O'Clock

This conversation is symmetrical because both people in the conversation are equal power levels to each other. The two people are students and the same age and gender an these factors can sometimes effect the way power is seen in some people. Claudia is very polite to Hayley when she invited her out at the weekend and they are both using standard English.

Claudia: mum! Please can I go to the concert next weekend! Everyone's going!
Mum: no claudia. I've said its too late to be up in London at 3am at your age.
Claudia: but I'll be with all my friends and I really don't wanna miss out!
Mum: claudia! I've herd enough. Your dad would never let you go either. Now stop keep going on.
Claudia: this is so unfair. All my other friends parents let them go. Your so embarrassing

This conversation is asymmetrical because of the power Claudia's mum has over Claudia. Claudia is asking for her mothers permission to do something this reflects power straight away and then when Claudia's mum answers her she is very close minded about it, and answers in a very strong demanding way. However Claudia's replies are trying to persuade her mum this is a good idea with the lexical choices used such a 'but'  'please!'. They both use standard English throughout this conversation.

My first grouping are texts A and C. These texts both have an audience of parents and adults. The texts context is their to persuade and inform.
The Ikea text (text C) is there to persuade you to buy the Ikea products with use of graphology and persuasive lexical choices such as 'sit back', 'lay down' and 'roll over' these imperatives are humorous because of the phonology used. this gives the text rhythm and suggests a command to a dog. The audience is also aimed at home-owners and the flyer is sent by post so the discourse structure and graphology needs to catch the home owners eyes to read the flyer in stead of them throwing in straight in the bin.

The road safety text (text A) primary purpose is to inform parents and adults who read a magazine, about how children copy adults when crossing the road. the lexical choices used such as the repetitive copying of a sentence, uses a great use of graphology with the colour of the children's writing being red which could represent blood, the text is also smeared as if the adult is crying over the text while reading it, reflecting such emotion up on the advert.

My second grouping of texts are D and E. Text D is the opening of a children's book. This uses great graphology features to support the linguistic methods used. the texts purpose is to entertain and the audience for the text is children, the pictures relate to the text to tell the story and to get a picture into the child's head creating an idea of there imagination of the story. However the language used in the text is standard English therefore some of the lexical choices could be hard for children to read so this book may be for an adult to read out loud for a child.

Text E is a text from a birdwatchers guide. the text is also entertain but more in a information form. The audience is more for adults and birdwatchers that understand the hobby, this is a difference between the two texts. The pragmatics used in graphology is used in text E to with pictures of birds to go with the information on the text to also tell the story and show what the birds look like. The register of this text is also standard English to make the lexical choices clear and interesting to read for adults.

My last grouping of texts are D and B. text B is an extract from he script of 'Blackadder goes forth' a comedy set during the 1914-18 war. The purpose of the text is to entertain the people of the war. The texts audience is for adults in the war and it is there to humour and lighten the mood of the time period it was from.
Spoken language features are used through the dialogue this is also used in the text D, the opening of the children's book is also spoken language and they both use slang English to set the time period to the audience for entertainment.

Task 3

This make up advert draws your attention to the brand name and the word 'Everywhere' the models face draws the reader to look at her make up through her huge bold blue eyes. the advert is short but affective because it explains how good the foundation is that you wont need to photo shop your face in pictures meaning your skin looks photo shopped with this makeup.

This advert is an advert for a on line fashion company introducing there new spring trend to there website. the colours used in the outfits are very simple and plain however the graphology of the butterfly's and flowers and colours used in the advert are very bright and fit the theme of spring with yellows and greens and purples to fit the theme of this seasons fashion trends. the words used 'spring is coming, let her in' is a good choice of words witch has humour and a persuasive teqnique to make the reader click on the website for the new trend such as when they say 'let her in' and also to provide information about the clothes on the models such the prices.

This advert for Micheal Kors purfume is set on the red carpet to fit the name of the brand 'very hollywood' this suggests to the reader how glamorous and classy this purfume for women is. The word 'very hollywood' is in a diffenet font to the usual micheal kors brand name this is to suggest its for woman and its sophistication to the product.
